a varied musical programme ranging from Bach to Broadway, with a bit of Indian raga and trad jazz thrown in.
Children and staff from Dauntseys School, Wiltshire, England, visited the Mathieson Music School as a cultural and educational exchange, from 21 - 29 October, 2005
"The late Reverend Father Theodore Mathieson was one of the most remarkable musical missionaries that Kolkata has seen. With his cello and his Beecham-like wit, he was a charismatic presence who created a new generation of musicians with a love for Bach and the classical world. His most famous pupil has been the cellist Anup Kumar Biswas, now a great champion of East-West fusion who has created the Mathieson Music School in Kolkata to perpetuate the name of his guru. The Mathieson school has now teamed up with the Dauntsey's School in Wiltshire, UK, and teachers and instrumentalists from that school come and teach at the Mathieson school and also enable their leading musicians like Mitali Makahal (violinist) and Dipak Sapui (cellist) to get international exposure.Jointly the two schools gave a concert at Kala Mandir, primarily to present a progress report from this unique institution but also to present the Mathieson-Dauntsey chorus and the orchestra. It was an evening of variety entertainment that was wholesome and enjoyable. The highlights apart from the solo cello recital of Anup Biswas were the duet from Mozart's Magic Flute by Charlotte Hargreaves and Steve Graney, sung in English. Dipak Sapui, cello, gave indications that another Biswas may be in the making. There were excerpts from Handel, Marcello, Vivaldi and Shostakovich. The large Kala Mandir audience enthusiastically cheered this concert which augers well for Kolkata's western classical scene. "
13 OCTOBER 2005 Dauntsey's School in Wiltshire, England, hosted an Indian Banquet for the Mathieson Music School.
