Poulton Village Hall New Piano Fund GODFREY SMITH in THE SUNDAY TIMES
"Last weekend some friends in the country - Tom and Sally Boyd - laid on a scrumptious Viennese evening in the gemütlich gardens of their Gloucestershire house.
Neither hails from the city of song, but no detail was spared to get the authentic Viennese atmosphere. Even the loos were marked Damen and Herren. We had a supper of frankfurters with sauerkraut, followed by an authentic Sachertorte. Then the 50 semi-professional musicians (many teachers), who were giving their services in aid of the village-hall fund, regaled us with a concert of Johann Strauss and Franz Lehar - all the way from Die Fledermaus to the Radetzky March. We ended with Vienna, City of My Dreams, and were supplied with words for this most celebrated of Richard Taubers showstoppers. Though Vienna for my family has been a city of bittersweet dreams, it seemed curmudgeonly not to join in. So we did: "Wien, Wien, nur du allein". The years rolled away."
